The Young House

New Bedford, MA
Scope: Schematic Design through Construction Administration.

Duration: 1995-2002

Project Description:
The addition and renovation to The Young House, an elderly housing complex owned by the Interchurch Council of Greater New Bedford and operated by MB Management of Braintree, is an example of a success story that can be attributed to close coordination between the design team, owners, and contractors. The project received the “Community of Quality Award for Elderly Property” by the New England Assisted Housing Management Association. The project was completed with the building fully occupied. Built in 1915, the original brick building was a four story, elderly housing complex. The project included the construction of a new steel frame addition to the existing courtyard, construction of a ramp for handicap accessibility, a new handicap accessible toilet, a kitchen, office, and community room for the 44 residents, and the remodeling of the associated spaces adjacent to the new addition.
