Project Description:
The Georges Island Fire / Submarine Lookout Tower is located on top of Fort Warren on Georges Island in the Boston Harbor Island State Park.The tower provides excellent viewing of the outer harbor and was a very popular attraction. The tower was showing signs of distress and needed to be inspected and evaluated to determine the current usability of the structure and the scope of needed repair.
The overall intent of the project was the renovation of the tower in order to provide a safe vantage point to view Georges Island, Fort Warren’s overall design and the surrounding harbor Islands, downtown Boston, and Metro area. Preliminary investigation was needed to develop a sense of how involved the future renovation would need to be.
The project scope was described in the proposal for architectural service as follows:
Inspect the existing structure and provide a report that includes recommendations concerning the continued use of the structure, identifies the major issues with the structure, all needed permits that will be required, and a preliminary cost estimate of the renovation.
